Ro-Ro

Quick answer

Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels are specialized cargo ships designed for transporting wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks, trailers, and heavy machinery. These ships use mobile ramps connecting the vessel to the port, allowing vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship, significantly reducing loading and unloading times.

Key characteristics of ro-ro vessels

Ro-Ro ships, also known as “rouliers” in French, derive their name from the English terms “roll on” and “roll off,” describing their unique loading method. These vessels are specifically engineered to transport all types of vehicles including cars, trucks, truck-trailers, container semi-trailers, oversized cargo, agricultural machinery, and heavy construction equipment.

The defining feature of Ro-Ro vessels is their horizontal loading technique, which stands in direct contrast to the “Lo-Lo” (lift on/lift off) method that uses vertical loading with cranes and lifting equipment. This roll-on/roll-off approach utilizes a mobile ramp fixed between the ship and the quay, enabling vehicles and rolling cargo to be driven aboard under their own power or with the help of specialized handling equipment.

Types and variations

The Ro-Ro category includes several specialized variants:

ConRo vessels combine Ro-Ro and Lo-Lo capabilities, offering flexibility for mixed cargo operations.

RoPax ships (roll-on-roll-off-passenger-ship) are designed to transport both rolling cargo and passengers simultaneously.

Some Ro-Ro vessels are also equipped to carry containers, expanding their operational versatility.

Operational advantages

Ro-Ro vessels offer significant productivity benefits through their reduced loading and unloading times. Their efficient design allows for faster turnaround in ports, making them ideal for high-frequency shipping routes. Currently, approximately 1,400 Ro-Ro vessels operate across global waters.

These ships are characterized by their shallow draft, making them particularly suitable for coastal operations and short-distance cabotage rather than intercontinental transfers. Their distinctive appearance features a box-like shape covering the entire length and width of the decks, with foldable ramps positioned at the stern and sides of the vessel.

The Ro-Ro loading technique represents a specialized port handling operation where operators move cargo via the port’s ro-ro ramp onto the ship’s mobile ramp, streamlining the entire cargo transfer process and maximizing operational efficiency.
