AEO Certification

Quick answer

AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) certification is a quality mark granted by customs authorities to reliable businesses involved in international trade and logistics. Companies that meet strict security and compliance criteria receive this certification, which provides simplified customs procedures and other benefits throughout the European Union.

What is AEO certification?

AEO certification is a program initiated by the World Customs Organisation (WCO) that establishes a partnership between customs authorities and compliant companies. The certification recognizes businesses as secure and reliable partners in the international supply chain, granting them preferential treatment in customs operations across the EU.

Who can apply for AEO certification?

Any economic operator established within the European Union’s customs territory and involved in international logistics or customs operations can apply for AEO certification. Eligible parties include importers, exporters, international transporters, international logisticians, airport companies handling cargo and temporary storage, customs commissioners, and transport commissioners. Companies of all sizes can volunteer for certification, provided they meet the stringent requirements.

Types of AEO certification

The program offers two main certification types based on Article 39 of the Union Customs Code (UCC):

AEOC (Customs Simplification): This certification allows companies to benefit from simplified customs procedures. Certified operators must demonstrate a clean record with no history of customs or tax penalties or criminal convictions, along with maintaining rigorous compliance standards.

AEOS (Safety and Security): This certification focuses on supply chain security measures, ensuring that certified operators meet enhanced safety and security requirements.

Benefits and requirements

The AEO program strengthens international supply chain security while facilitating legal trade for compliant businesses. The relationship between customs authorities and AEO applicants is built on transparency, mutual respect, and legal compliance, leading to shared responsibility for supply chain security.

Companies that achieve AEO status enjoy advantages throughout the EU, including faster customs clearance, fewer physical inspections, priority treatment during customs controls, and mutual recognition agreements with other countries. The certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to security and compliance, making it a valuable credential in international logistics operations.
