What is digital vehicle inspection?

Since 2006, all road transport vehicles carrying goods or passengers with a maximum permissible laden weight (MPLW) exceeding 3.5 tonnes must be equipped with a digital chronotachograph. The device, which resembles a car radio in appearance, serves dual purposes: supporting company fleet management for inspection and maintenance, and providing data to authorized state authorities (such as DREAL and DIRRECTE) during roadside inspections.
